What is Podiatry?

Have you ever asked yourself what a podiatrist actually does? I have been asked many times and often been told, “Don’t you just get rid of calluses and corns?” This inspired me to write a little bit about what a podiatrist ACTUALLY does and is QUALIFIED to do!

We also get asked a lot, “Why would you want to work with people’s feet?” but that’s for another post!

As a podiatrist we are professionally trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate a variety of lower limb and foot conditions. Aside from treating a range of skin and nail disorders such as corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, fungal nails and warts we also specialise in neurological and circulatory conditions including diabetes, peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease.

One aspect of podiatry that surprises many people is that podiatrists also specialise in soft tissue, bone and joint pathologies of the lower limb and foot. These include heel pain, plantar fasciitis, bunions, Achilles tendonitis, forefoot pain, back/knee and leg pain and shin splints just to name a few! So, if you are suffering any of these complaints or dealing with any other lower limb or foot discomfort give us a call at Patterson Allied Health. Our friendly staff will book you an appointment with one of our podiatrists at a time that suits you!
